SOLUTION: I know I'm a little late on this but for the other people coming here with the same problem: This happened to me, I kept trying to open the game I think I edited the display properties, or reinstalled. So all you gotta do is run d2 (in winxp SP2 compatibility mode), and press alt-tab to bring the focus back to windows.
